HISTORY


The Suncoast African American Chamber of Commerce Inc. was started in the spring of 2004.  There were several attempts previously by the African American community to establish a chamber of commerce.  The current organization was formed by members of the previous chambers and newly recruited community members of small business persons, lawyers, doctors, community leaders and consultants from the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County, Florida residents.

The Suncoast African American Chamber of Commerce (SAACC) was incorporated November 28, 2005 with Chapter 617, F.S.,(Not for Profit)

July 18th 2006 The Suncoast African American Chamber of Commerce Inc. became a member of the National Black Chamber of Commerce.

March 2006 Million Fathers March SAACC partnered with Black Stars  www.blackstarproject.org during this time fathers all over the United States join in and take their children to school on the date designated.

June 1, 2007. The Suncoast African American Chamber of Commerce Inc. became a tax-exempt from Federal Income tax under section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code on

July 17th 2007 SAACC signed the contract to adopt Ragan Park through the City of Tampa Adopt-A-Park program

August 8, 2007 until October 13th 2007 SAACC sponsored with the Black Stars of Chicago along with 125 cities all across the nation to participate in the Million Fathers March.  This event was not only for African American men, women and others were welcomed as they have assumed the lead role in their families; in attending the first day of school with their children.

August 11, 2007 SAACC partnered with Mount Mariah Primitive Baptist Church as they present their Health Fare.

January 2008 SAACC became a sponsor for Prevent Blindness Florida for their 2008 Campaign.  The Sight-Saver Campaign and voluntary check-off programs are important fund raisers for Prevention Blindness Florida, founded in 1957.  The organization's mission, to prevent blindness and preserve sight, is accomplished by providing vision screening for children, visual field screenings for at-risk adults and public education initiatives on eye health and safety.  In addition, for those identified with a vision problem and whose families lack financial resources, Prevent Blindness Florida supplies unlimited vouchers for free eye exams and glasses.

March 27, 2008 SAACC hosted a Wealth Seminar with invited guest/Keynote Speaker Dr. Carolyn Ford, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Florida Black Chamber of Commerce www.floridabcc.com who brought with her strategies on building wealth.

March 29, 2008 SAACC partnered with the City of Tampa for their 2nd Annual City of Tampa Clean City Day.  www.tampagov.net/dept_clean_city Clean City is a division of Neighborhood Services.  Clean City provide a comprehensive, landscape and maintenance system to the interstate, gateways and medians in an effort to reduce litter, graffiti and illegal dumping through education and enforcement thus create a city environment that is aesthetically pleasing.  This event was designed to support beautification projects, clean-up efforts, adopt-a-street program and recycling awareness.  This event worked along with Friends of Clean City, to initiate efforts during "The Great American Clean Up" the nation's largest community improvement program, held between March and May each year.

April 26, 2008 SAACC partnered with the Mayors' African American Advisory Council (MAAAC) www.tampagov.net/MAAAC in presenting the City of Tampa 2008 Small & Minority Business Symposium.  This event was free to the public targeting on building better relationships and partnerships, sponsored by MAAAC.  Offered were a free networking luncheon, panel discussions, workshops, post symposium forum and business matching trade show.  Other partners were Bright House Networks, Hillsborough Community College, Panera Bread, Time Customer Services, Inc., Florida Sentinel Bulletin, Smoothie King and Tampa International Airport. 

July 5, 2008, Saturday, SAACC partnered with the National Black Nurses Tampa Bay Chapter Inc., Sonja Collins, Pharmacist, Clara Cobb, USF, David Denson, ETCRP Safety Committee/Suncoast African American Chamber of Commerce Inc. to provide Bring Your Medication Day for review and consultation, for safety, utilization, compliance and questions.
